Stairway was such a fun knit, that I was a little sad to finish it. I like the steps, the stripey yarn and the garter stitches. I didn't like garter stitches when I first started knitting. But lately, I'm beginning to like garter stitches a lot, especially in scarves and shawls. It is reversible and has a certain springi-ness which stockinette doesn't have. By the way, I didn't block Stairway because I think blocking it would make the scarf more drapey and less springy, if you know what I mean. Plus, I'm lazy.
Needle:4.5mm
Note to self: I used this method to cast on stitches for each new step: cast on 4 stitches instead of 5. Then in the next row, I knit the 4 new stitches, then looped the long bit of yarn back onto the left needle to knit the 5th stitch. Result - no gaping hole
I made this pancake for breakfast from this recipe. I was so pleased because I got to use my skillet with the detachable handle for the first time. What I mean is that I detached the handle for the first time and put the skillet into the oven to bake the pancake.
It turned out a little wet probably because I used 3 small eggs instead of 2 large eggs as required in the recipe. Note to self: 3 small eggs ≠ 2 large eggs. I didn't have nutmeg so I substituted with cinnamon, which worked fine. I ate it with strawberry jam. I liked this pancake but my family didn't like it as much. I think that's because they prefer savoury breakfasts over sweet breakfasts.
I am the same about blocking garter stitch, in my opinion this pattern makes so very neat side seams that blocking is not necessary (you see, I am lazy, too, but in this case I am sure we both are quite right about blocking!!!) Love the colours of your scarf (and the scarf itself also, of course), they are so tender and soft. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I eat lots of sweet things starting from afternoon to late night, I dislike it absolutely for breakfast. Can´t understand why so many people are eating jam or honey at this early time of day. (Can´t understand, frankly said, how they could eat anything at this early time, my breakfast mostly is more than 2 or 3 hours later than rising). But to come back to your pancake: it looks very good and a pancake which is a bit soft is lovely to eat. If you will give your new pan and your pancake a second chance with your family, then you could try this recipe: After taking it out of the oven, melt some butter and sugar in a new pan, add the pancake and 'roast' it a bit in this butter-sugar sauce, until it´s golden brown. Take 2 forks and cut it into little pieces. Enjoy it with apple compot or any fresh sliced fruit, ice cream would also be wonderful, and voilá, you have made an 'Kaiserschmarrn', a very popular Austrian meal.

I agree, there is a wonderful feel to garter stitch. I love the strips, this will be a fun wear when the weather cools...is it cooling there yet?
ReplyDeleteFunny about the pan, I love dishes and pans so anytime I use something new is fun - the pancake looks so good - huge on my computer screen, I wish I had a fork!
