sockapalooza done

Dust from a renovation project at work went on for two weeks and left me with clogged-up sinuses that developed into rhinitis. It affected my knitting because, by the time I got home, all I wanted to do was sleep. Fortunately, the dust has settled and the medication is working and I can feel my knitting senses reviving. It's so good to get back to knitting.

My sockapalooza socks.

Yarn: regia silk
Pattern: Juani's braided cable sock
Needles: 2 circular needles 2.75mm

Cable cast on makes a nice stretchy cast on for ribbing. I have used it before to start the garter stitch edging of the kimono shawl and it gives a nice smooth edge. I may use this cast-on method from now on instead of the long tail cast-on. I would love to hear from you if you know of any reason why I shouldn't. I have tried to search in vain for the pros and cons of this cast-on method.

I used the 3 needle bind-off (instead of grafting) for the toe as suggested in the pattern. The designer’s view is that 3-needle bind-off is stronger than grafting. What about you? What method do you prefer? I added one more cable repeat to the length as my row gauge was ever so slightly off, 21 rows to 2 inches instead of 20. Oops, after knitting the socks I realised that I had done 2 X 2 ribbing instead of 1 X 1 ribbing. I guess it doesn't really matter.

One of the circular needles that I used for knitting this sock is my new aluminium (or is it steel, whatever metallic?) clover needles and I like it very much. It slides so smoothly when I knit and the ends are rounded just so. Knitting the regia silk with it was pure pleasure.

Now that I have completed the socks, let me show you my current distractions. Crochet flowers from my growing collection of Japanese crafty books have been on my mind for quite a while, so I finally sat down and made these two, for a start. I am going to make them from my miscellany scrap yarns. These are probably going to be brooches with a safety pin sewed to the back. There are many flower patterns to try (including one knit pattern in the latest Rowan magazine 39) and hopefully, I will have more to show you the next time.

Here's another crochet in progress. I am crocheting from a ball of string, actually it looks and feels more like rope, gunny (burlap) sack rope. Can you guess what I am making?

And I am glad that the next sewiknit project is going to be BAGS!! If you haven't signed up, you can still do so.

  1. Great looking socks! I use the cable co for almost everything I do-I love it because it’s sturdy and stretchy. No cons here, but I’d be interested in what others have to say. (BTW your kimono shawl is so beautiful!)

  2. Cute socks and flowers! I'm guessing your crochet project is a bag?

  3. Beauteous socks! Congratulations on finishing!!

I find cable cast on to be dense and less elastic than others. Its neat, corded appearance seems especially suited for buttonholes, otherwise I don't use it much.

  4. I really like your sockpalsocks and the flowers are beautiful too! I've been wanting to try that Regia Silk, but I think that I should finish at least one pair of socks before buying more sock yarn… :-D

  5. Your socks are gorgeous!! I love the braided cables and the Regia silk looks so luxurious. Your sock pal is such a lucky gal! ;-) I've always used Kitchener for my toes, but now I'm thinking about using a 3 needle bind-off instead. Also, I didn't realize that Clover makes aluminum needles! I'll be on the lookout for them now. Take care and have a great weekend, Erin! :-)

  6. Great socks! I love the crocheted flowers too... I would guess a bag like Lyn at Knitties did or a rug??? That is because you said that the next sewIknit project is a bag (but that is sewing, not crocheting), so you are making two bags... or crocheted rug and a sewn bag?

Your socks are perfect and I love the heels.
Oh crochet,I'll be learning some skill this Tuesday. I want so much to learn how to make those flowers too. Are you crocheting a rug?

  8. Those little flowers are so sweet. I can crochet a straight line, but that is it.

The socks are great too! You are very talented.

  10. Just like your posting "better late than never", I love your Michael Kors cable tee!!! I had my eye on that too and guess what? I have 4 balls of Jaegar Trininity in my yarn stash!!! Awesome.

I also like the pattern of your socks... it's very cute!

  11. I've been using the three needle bind off for the toes, simply because my grafting looks awful at each end. But then I do feel the seams when I wear the socks.

Are you making one of those crochet bags in the Japanese books? Oh, you must embroider it too! :)

  12. Cable cast on is the usual method I choose because I don't have to guess how much yarn to leave for the long tail. And I've always grafted. Turning the sock around with the needles still there for the 3-needle bind-off seems a bit acrobatic to me.

  13. Your socks are looking great and I like the heels, they look good with the cables. I never tried cable cast on, always use long-tail what I learned at school (and sometimes it is a very very long tail). And I always sew the last 8 toe- stitches together and they are very strong, too.
I like your flowers so much, they are nice and fantastic for a brooche and a good way for yarn remnants. I have seen a blanket made of hundreds (?) of flowers, crochetted together, very lovely, too. (But also hundreds of threads to sew in)
And I guess you are making a rug? And maybe you will explain how to make such a perfect oval piece?

  14. All these years I thought I was using cable co until I read Elizabeth Zimmermann's book describing how she was taught wrongly at school. Actually it is lace cast on. (*going red in the face*)I use cable co whenever possible now and loves the way it looks. And I pay more attention to knitting books!
